Full Background

As an underworld accountant, he helps the Black Claw Gang make a fortune in prison through a variety of "special means". Of course, some of it also goes into his own pockets.

Raphael showed a great talent for mathematics since he was a child, and was able to solve high school level problems with ease while still in elementary school. However, his intelligence did not help his family. When his father's factory closed down due to poor management, the bank took their house as collateral, and Raphael moved to Skidroad with his parents. It was then that he realized just how important money is.

Life at Skidroad was chaotic and hard. Young Raphael often fought with others to earn a little money, and the detention center became his second home. However, his predicament may have been a blessing in disguise. After yet another arrest for fighting on the street, Raphael met a strange old man in the detention center. He was using pieces of broken stone from the ground to write mathematical formulas on the wall, and Raphael helped solve them using mental arithmetic. Charles the Crow introduced himself. It turned out that he was a gangland accountant, working on money laundering and lending. Impressed by Raphael's mathematical talent, Charles asked Raphael to become his assistant. Raphael saw a chance to change his fate, and he seized it without hesitation.

Raphael took to the work like a duck to water. A few years later, seeing that his student knew everything he needed in order to take over, Charles decided that it was time to retire. However, the old accountant knew too many secrets, and the gang's boss killed him during his "retirement dinner".

When he learned the news, Raphael was filled with both rage over the death of his teacher and terror at seeing his own eventual fate. He had to do something. He secretly transferred all of the gang's money to an account that he held in the boss's name, taking everything for himself. Just as Raphael had hoped, this kicked off bloody infighting within the gang.

To keep himself out of danger, he was smart enough to leak evidence incriminating himself to the police. This allowed him to hide out in prison and watch the bloodshed from the sidelines. Raphael succeeded in achieving his four objectives: avenging old Charles, escaping the gang, taking the gang's money for himself, and making sure he had enough funds in prison. Perhaps only a mathematical genius like Raphael was capable of devising and executing such an intricate plan to kill four birds with one stone.
